NEWS FROM AROUND TEXAS

TEXAS SNAP ROLLS HIT 17-YEAR LOW

The number of Texans getting food stamps has hit a 17-year low, The Texas Tribune reported.

There were 2.8 million Texans enrolled in SNAP in September, the lowest number since August 2009, according to the latest Texas Health and Human Services Commission data.

The drop comes as the federal government tightens eligibility and the state struggles to process applications on time.

COURT: NO BOND RIGHT FOR DETAINED IMMIGRANTS

Immigrants who entered the country illegally don't have a right to seek bond while in custody during deportation proceedings, a federal appeals court ruled Friday, The Texas Tribune reported.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans ruled 10-7 that the government can hold detained immigrants until they are deported.

That holds even if they have made a life in the U.S. and have no criminal history. Judge Cory Wilson wrote the ruling.
