GRANBURY, Texas. Public hearings for City Council members facing recall are scheduled for Monday, Sept. 28.
The petitions target Jarratt, Mayor Pro Tem Bruce Wadley, Greg Corrigan, Gary “Skip” Overdier and Zeb Ullom. All five have requested hearings to respond to the allegations against them.
However, the city was already weeks past a mandatory charter deadline before the hearings were requested.
The petitions were filed July 13. Section 4.08 of the Granbury City Charter required the city secretary to present them to the council within 15 days, making July 28 the deadline.
Instead, the city rejected the petitions on July 28 and did not present them until Sept. 8, after organizers challenged the decision in the Second Court of Appeals. That was 42 days past the charter deadline and 57 days after the petitions were filed.
The Sept. 28 hearing may fall within the charter’s separate requirement that hearings occur five to 15 days after being requested. However, that clock began only after the city finally presented the petitions. Scheduling the hearings does not erase the original missed deadline.
The next fight is over when voters could decide the recalls. City Attorney Jeremy SoRelle is pushing the position that May 2027 is the next available election date. Petitioners are demanding a November election and could return to court to prevent the city’s delay from postponing the vote.
The charter requires the council to order a recall election for the earliest date permitted by state law when an official refuses to resign.
The recall effort grew from opposition to Project Patriot and allegations that city leaders placed private development interests ahead of residents.
The Sept. 28 hearings move the recall forward, but the process remains weeks behind because the city failed to meet its original deadline.
