NEWS FROM AROUND TEXAS
TEXAS WEIGHS SPACE ACADEMY INCENTIVE
Texas is competing to host the new U.S. Space Academy. Board members of the Texas Space Commission discussed up to $100 million in state money as an incentive, Houston Public Media reports.
That discussion was non-binding, not an approved spending commitment. States' proposals are due Nov. 16, with recommendations to the president due by Dec. 26.
TEXAS SEEKS END TO CHILD WELFARE SUIT
A multi-day Houston hearing on Texas' request to dismiss a long-running child welfare lawsuit was scheduled to begin Tuesday before U.S. District Judge Randy Crane, The Texas Tribune reports.
The case, filed in 2011, concerns oversight of a $4.9 billion system serving about 6,800 children. It is the lawsuit's first public hearing in two years, according to the Tribune.
State attorneys argue court monitoring should end. An attorney for the children opposes ending the remedies now, warning children would suffer, the report says.
ABBOTT SAYS NO BOCA CHICA VOTE SOON
Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday, Oct. 19, that a possible sale of Boca Chica State Park land to SpaceX would not come up for a vote soon, The Texas Tribune reports.
A Parks and Wildlife spokesperson said the commission is not considering the sale at its November meeting. Texas Monthly had reported plans to discuss selling 1,300 acres in Cameron County.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa opposed the potential sale, saying, "Texas is not for sale."
