SUPREME COURT REJECTS BID TO ENFORCE TRANS INMATE CARE LIMITS

The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a Trump administration appeal seeking to immediately enforce medical care restrictions for transgender people in prison, The Associated Press reported.

That decision leaves in place lower-court orders requiring prison officials to keep providing treatments like hormone therapy.

Administration officials had asked to enforce a policy halting surgeries, hormones and social accommodations. It was adopted after an executive order from President Donald Trump.

Attorneys for transgender inmates said the policy violated their rights and amounted to cruel and unusual punishment. The administration argued the treatments raised security concerns.

PUTIN AGREES TO RESUME UKRAINE PEACE TALKS AFTER NOV. 10

Russia has agreed to resume three-way negotiations next month with Washington and Kyiv aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, a Kremlin official said Wednesday, according to the AP.

The statement followed a meeting in St. Petersburg between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.

Putin agreed in principle to restart the talks after Nov. 10, with a focus on security for Russia and Ukraine after the conflict ends.

The same visit also brought a release. Witkoff announced Wednesday that Russia freed Stephen Hubbard, an American from Michigan who had been held in Russia for over four years.

The U.S. government under the Biden administration designated Hubbard as wrongfully detained, the AP reported.

JUDGE ORDERS META TO PAY NEW MEXICO $25 BILLION

A judge has ordered Meta to pay New Mexico $25 billion for deceiving users about privacy on Facebook, the biggest fine ever against the company, the AP reported.

Judge Francis J. Mathew said in Wednesday’s ruling that Facebook’s conduct was intentional and that executives consistently misled users about how the platform worked.

The ruling follows a September decision in which jurors found Meta responsible for millions of violations of state consumer protection laws. Meta is appealing the verdict.

Those violations stem from the Cambridge Analytica case, in which user data was harvested for political ads during the 2016 election.

State Attorney General Raúl Torrez said the verdict should be seen as a warning to tech companies that they will be held accountable.

TOLEDO CHEMICAL LEAK FORCES NEARLY 1,000 TO EVACUATE

A chemical tank rupture in Toledo, Ohio, forced nearly 1,000 residents to evacuate and others to shelter in place because of the potentially toxic leak, the AP reported.

City leaders are allowing the chemical to vent instead of trying to stop the leak. They say sending in first responders would be even more dangerous.

The tank contains a chemical used in plastics and paints. Officials warn it may be explosive, but they said the situation continued to improve Wednesday afternoon.

Some residents felt irritation in their eyes and throats, and one sheriff’s deputy who responded went to a hospital after not feeling well.

SPACEX PROFIT REPORT HELPS LIFT WALL STREET

U.S. stocks climbed Wednesday following strong profit reports from SpaceX, Capital One Financial and other big companies, the AP reported.

The S&P 500 added 0.6% and pulled within 0.8% of its all-time high set earlier this month, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.7% and the Nasdaq composite climbed 1.1%.

A much better profit report from SpaceX than analysts expected helped lift AI-related stocks and Tesla, Elon Musk’s other publicly traded company.

That made up for losses by Netflix and other stocks hurt by worries about upcoming growth.
